Writing every day

Why writing every day is a great habit

I try to write something every day. It doesn’t always flow like I would want it to. I think there is something about getting thoughts out on a page that can help to clear the mind. It is a bit of a cliche, and many writer will attest that you don’t have to do it every day. But I do think that writing is a bit like going to the gym. You need to be consistent to get results. Going to the gym for 16 hours once every 2 months won’t do much in terms of results. No doubt you will try, get bored and not return, because it actually gets painful.

That doesn’t mean that you can’t vary your approach. Sometimes I will write short articles (like this one provided by todays writing prompt) or a poem. Sometimes I will pull myself together and get on with one of the bigger projects. I have a novella that needs finishing up and have been promising myself that it will be out this year, once I get the cover finalised.

There are numerous projects on the go currently and I do have the bad habit of not completing any of them. Mainly because of the distractions of day to day life or the dog insisting on being let out as soon as she sees me approach the laptop. It doesn’t matter that the door is already open, I think she just wants the company.

Creating habits that help, useful habits, can be really beneficial. I think the key is to make sure you start small. No one successfully sets out a habit of running a marathon a day, but many people can happily run round the block and feel they have achieved something. Again, it is an easy habit to be consistent with, doesn’t take a long time to complete and is achievable. Keep these things in mind when planning your habits that help. It won’t change your life overnight, but in the long run, maybe it will.
