What could I do more of (and less of)

I think we are all guilty of this to a certain extent, putting off the thing that you really want to do in favour of the less interesting (but necessary) tasks of the day. I know I should be writing when I get spare time, and yet getting to that point where you have enough time to get your thoughts together is a real challenge.

I tend to write in short bursts, unless there is a period of time where I have literally nothing else to do. I was recently on a budget flight for four hours, there was no in flight entertainment, so of course when the other option is staring at the back of someone else’s head for the duration I could settle down to write. I managed to get a good couple of thousand words down as part of a novel i am working on, and a couple of random poems and thoughts as well. Here’s the thing. I always feel better for having committed to writing something, rarely do I feel better about all the other random tasks that hold little meaning.

I work full time, which means that I cannot commit days on end to doing what I enjoy most. Despite this I have managed to achieve quite a lot I think. Two poetry books, a novella coming out soon and quite a few writing credits to my name, not to mention a recent nomination for a Genrepunk award.

I still think that the rule of consistency is key. Keep going at the thing you love doing, even if it is only in small doses. Each step takes you closer to your goal. Nothing beats that (eventual) sense of achievement.
